Saudi Oil Production Drops to Lowest Levels Since 1990

Recent data revealed that Saudi Arabia's crude oil production dropped to levels not seen in the Kingdom since 1990, as part of its commitment to a deep voluntary cut within the OPEC+ alliance agreement, as reported.

The Kingdom currently produces around 8.5 to 9 million barrels per day, down by more than 2 million barrels from its maximum production capacity of 12 million barrels per day, in a clear bet on raising prices to safeguard revenues at the expense of market share.

Reports indicate that this reduction came as a result of increasing economic pressures on the Kingdom's budget, which requires an oil price exceeding $80 per barrel to achieve fiscal balance, amid heavy spending on Vision 2030 projects.

Energy analysts view this historic decline as an indicator that the Kingdom now favors prices over volume, a strategic shift that could redraw the map of balances in the global oil market in the long run, according to reports.

What do these terms mean?

OPEC+: An alliance comprising 13 OPEC countries and about 10 additional producing nations, whose members agree on oil production levels to manage supply and prices in the global market.

Voluntary Cut: A decision to reduce production made individually by a member of the alliance beyond agreed quotas, typically implemented by Saudi Arabia in its capacity as the swing producer.
