US Bond Yield Jumps to Highest Level in 19 Years

The yield on the 30-year US bond rose to 5.337% on August 18, recording its highest level in nearly 19 years amid a sharp sell-off in long-term debt.

Investors pushed US Treasuries downward as concerns escalated over persistent inflation and rising budget deficits, alongside massive borrowing linked to the artificial intelligence boom.

The 10-year bond yield reached the 4.70–4.75% range in turn, putting severe pressure on tech stocks, which are typically more affected by rising interest rates than others.

This wave is considered one of the most prominent shifts in global debt markets, and warns of a new phase in which investors may find borrowing costs a permanent burden rather than a temporary exception.

What do these terms mean?

Bond Yield: The annual percentage an investor earns for holding a government debt bond — as investors sell bonds and their prices drop, the yield automatically rises.

Long-Term Bonds: Debt instruments extending over long periods, such as 10 or 30 years, which are the most sensitive to long-term inflation and interest rate expectations.

Tech Stocks: Shares of technology companies, classified as "growth" assets that suffer more than others when interest rates rise, as their value is tied to distant future earnings.
