Abu Dhabi Court Orders Fraudster to Refund AED 16,000 Over Fake License Plate Ad

The Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Claims Court ordered a fraudster to refund the amount of AED 16,000 obtained through a fake online advertisement for a distinctive car license plate, according to the lawsuit.

The court also awarded material and moral compensation of AED 3,000 to redress the damages suffered by the victim, who was lured into paying the amount.

The defendant had previously been criminally convicted and sentenced in absentia to one year in prison and deportation from the country, a conviction upon which the civil lawsuit filed to recover the money was based.

The court held that wrongfully taken money must be returned to its owner, and that the criminal ruling is final and binding in relation to the civil lawsuit, thereby strengthening the victim's legal standing.

What do these terms mean?

In absentia ruling: A judgment issued by the court in the absence of the defendant. Moral compensation: An amount awarded for psychological or moral harm. Refund of money: Returning wrongfully taken funds to their owner.
