European Manufacturing PMI Rises to 14-Month High

The Eurozone Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) jumped to a 14-month high in July, in a clear sign that the industrial recession that weighed heavily on the region throughout 2023 and early 2024 is nearing its end.

The index was boosted by an expansion in both new orders and export orders, indicating that the recovery is not merely domestic activity, but extends to external demand for European goods.

The strong performance inspired some optimism regarding the prospects for the German economy, which has remained the main obstacle to European recovery, driven by an increase in production orders in the automotive and mechanical equipment sectors.

Analysts agree that if this momentum continues for three consecutive months, it will radically transform the European economic outlook and could reshape the European Central Bank's expectations regarding the pace of interest rate cuts in the second half of the year.

What do these terms mean?

Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI): A monthly survey measuring manufacturing or services sector activity. A figure above 50 indicates expansion, while below 50 indicates contraction. It is considered one of the fastest indicators to paint an economic picture.

New Export Orders: Purchase orders for industrial goods coming from outside the Eurozone; a rise indicates growing global demand for European products.

Industrial Recession: A period during which industrial output declines for two or more consecutive quarters, which may hinder overall economic growth and threaten jobs in manufacturing sectors.
