Germany and Nvidia Agree to Lead Industrial AI

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and two federal ministries signed a joint letter of intent with Nvidia on industrial and physical AI, on the sidelines of the "Invest in Germany" summit in Berlin, according to the company's blog.

The declaration was signed by the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and the Ministry for Research, Technology, and Space, alongside Merz and Nvidia. It establishes joint work on advanced AI models for physical intelligence and reinforces the company's cooperation with Germany's "Industry 4.0 Platform," which includes representatives from politics, industry, research, and trade associations.

Merz stated that Germany is committed to being one of the most advanced countries in utilizing AI and integrating it into its industry, noting that small and medium-sized enterprises represent the country's greatest competitive advantage. Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, said that artificial intelligence enhances companies' capabilities rather than replacing them.

Huang announced new investments in four German startups, Agile Robots, Avelios Medical, Mirelo, and Reflex Aerospace, as part of Nvidia's commitment of nearly $10 billion to support companies, universities, and research centers in Europe. In the same context, Siemens announced a partnership with Nvidia to develop autonomous AI-driven factories, while Nvidia researchers simulated a fault-tolerant 104-qubit quantum computer on the Jupiter supercomputer at the Jülich center.

What do these terms mean?

Physical Intelligence: The application of artificial intelligence in systems that interact with the physical world, such as robots, factories, and vehicles.

Industry 4.0 Platform: A German initiative bringing together government, industry, and research to advance the use of digital technologies in production.

Qubit: The basic unit of information in quantum computing, used in complex calculations that classical computers cannot perform.
