Space Force Distributes $60 Million to 5 Space Companies, Counterbalancing SpaceX Dominance
Space Force awarded $60 million in contracts to 5 space companies, while Virgin Galactic announced delaying its flights until 2027, and AST SpaceMobile recorded a $230 million loss.

The U.S. Space Force awarded contracts totaling $60 million to five manufacturing companies under the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA) program, in a move aimed at breaking SpaceX's dominance over military satellite contracts and ensuring the diversification of the defense supply chain.
Virgin Galactic announced its Q2 2025 results, with revenues not exceeding $0.1 million, while the company confirmed delaying the launch of its commercial flights with the Delta Class vehicle until February 2027, with expected quarterly cash burn ranging between $95 million and $100 million until then.
AST SpaceMobile recorded revenues of $31.5 million in the second quarter, below expectations, while its net loss reached $230.9 million. Deutsche Bank lowered its price target for the stock, and the company faced a shareholder lawsuit regarding financial disclosures, while maintaining 17 BlueBirds satellites in low Earth orbit.
Combined, these results reveal a sharp paradox in the commercial space sector: While the Pentagon pumps money to reduce reliance on a single provider, competing companies struggle to generate revenue and maintain schedules, leaving SpaceX in a position of de facto dominance, at least for the foreseeable future.
What Do These Terms Mean?
PWSA (Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture): A U.S. military program to build a low-Earth orbit satellite network distributed across multiple providers, rather than relying on massive single targets.
BlueBirds: AST SpaceMobile's commercial low-orbit satellites designed for direct connectivity to ordinary smartphones without requiring special equipment.
Captive Carry: A test phase in which a spacecraft is carried under the wing of a mother aircraft without an actual launch, to verify its systems prior to independent flights.
