Colorado State University researchers have developed a catalytic process that converts carbon dioxide into durable, recyclable plastic, published in the journal Nature in a promising scientific breakthrough.

Researchers at Colorado State University have developed a new catalytic process that converts natural carbon dioxide into high-performance, recyclable plastics, in a scientific breakthrough published in the journal Nature that could change the future of the plastics industry.
The process integrates carbon dioxide with bicycloalkane in a chemical reaction initiated by organic catalysts, resulting in durable, customizable, and highly stable plastic, as polymers can be designed to have the strength of rigid plastic or the flexibility of rubber as needed.
Crucially, the essential molecular components of this plastic can be fully recovered during recycling, setting it apart from conventional plastic that degrades with every cycle. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation and the BOTTLE consortium for circular economy.
This discovery represents a promising step toward a true circular economy for plastics, though the road from the laboratory to large-scale industrial production remains long; challenges regarding scaling up production and economic viability remain a major hurdle to turning this technology into a viable commercial alternative to current plastics.
What do these terms mean?
Carbon Dioxide (CO₂): A gas produced by burning fuels and one of the most prominent greenhouse gases. Researchers seek to transform it from an environmental problem into an industrial raw material.
Organic Catalyst: A non-metallic chemical substance that speeds up reactions without being consumed, favored by researchers because it is less toxic and more abundant than metallic catalysts.
Polymer: Large molecules consisting of repeating bonded units. Most types of plastic are polymers, and their properties (rigidity or flexibility) are determined by the nature of their structural units.
Circular Economy: An economic model that extends the lifespan of materials through reuse and recycling instead of disposing of them after initial use.
