Trump Closes Door on Negotiations with Iran as Strait of Hormuz Weighs on Global Asset Prices

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that no negotiations are taking place with Iran "now or in the future," while Tehran confirmed it will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until all U.S. conditions are fully met, in an escalation that deepens uncertainty in global markets.

In the meantime, the UAE suspended all its commercial, financial, and trade dealings with Iran, adding a new layer of geopolitical premium to oil prices and financial assets, amid fears that tensions could spill over to other regional partners.

Crude oil, gold, and safe-haven currency markets are recording significant increases in risk premiums, amid estimates that a continued closure for additional months could cost the global economy losses exceeding $1 trillion annually.

Analysts agree that this diplomatic stalemate goes beyond the usual nuclear dispute; the current landscape is repricing entire regional geopolitical risks across all global asset classes.

What do these terms mean?

Geopolitical risk premium: The increase in an asset's price, such as oil or gold, that does not reflect actual supply and demand, but rather reflects investors' fears of sudden political or military events.

Safe haven: Assets that investors turn to during crises, such as gold, the Swiss franc, and the Japanese yen, because they retain their value or rise when other markets decline.

Geopolitical premium: An additional amount paid by importers and investors above the normal price of an asset, to compensate for the risk of supply disruptions or escalating conflicts in the producing region.
