90% Drop in Commercial Shipping Through Hormuz Ignites Global Energy Supply Concerns

Reports indicate that commercial shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has dropped by more than 90% compared to its normal levels, exerting unprecedented pressure on global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.

The Strait of Hormuz represents a vital energy lifeline, with between 25% and 30% of the world's total seaborne oil tankers passing through it, in addition to 20% of liquefied natural gas shipments, according to International Energy Agency data.

These developments have sparked a wave of anxiety in global markets, as energy-importing countries have begun redrawing supply chain maps in search of alternative routes, amid uncertainty over how long this disruption will persist.

Energy experts warn that continued disruption at this level could lead to an inflationary wave in global energy prices in the coming months — especially if winter sets in and demand rises.
