Centinela Copper Mine Strike Enters Second Day Amid Output Drop Warning

The strike by workers at the Centinela copper mine, owned by Chilean company Antofagasta Minerals, has entered its second day following a stoppage that began on Wednesday, October 7.

Unions stated that over half of the vital shovel (loader) and drill operators, as well as more than 60% of equipment maintenance technicians, participated in the strike, threatening to disrupt operations.

Unions warned that the full impact on production, expected to be a drop of around 50%, will manifest next November.

The company said it offered bonuses and a soft loan worth approximately $26,400 per member, in addition to a 2% base salary adjustment, in an effort to end the strike. The market is closely monitoring this stoppage as it could reduce copper supply from one of Latin America's largest mines.
