U.S.-based fusion energy company Type One Energy has closed a $200 million Series B funding round with participation from Siemens Energy Ventures, Reuters reported via Global Banking & Finance Review. This comes at a time when investors are reconsidering long-horizon energy technologies.
Existing investors such as Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Clutterbuck Capital participated in the round, alongside new investors Lowercarbon Capital and SiteGround Capital, bringing the company's total funding to over $400 million. The mix of existing and new investors reflects continued support from climate tech-specialized funds for fusion projects.
The report cited PitchBook data ranking the round as the third-largest Series B round in the sector over the past five years, indicating a resurgence of investment interest in nuclear fusion technologies. This ranking suggests the sector has regained some of its momentum after years of slowdown.
The funds will be directed toward technology development and deploying the "Infinity One" engineering prototype, aiming to build a commercial plant at TVA's Bull Run site in the U.S. state of Tennessee. The prototype's success is expected to determine the viability of the technology's commercial pathway. If successful, it could pave the way for building the first grid-connected commercial fusion plants.
