Egypt’s Banks Compete for Household Savings as Liquidity Falls
Banks are issuing certificates at varied yields after domestic liquidity fell 68.9 billion pounds, with savers also moving into gold and funds.

Egyptian banks are competing for household savings by issuing certificates at a range of yields, at a time when domestic liquidity has recorded its first monthly decline since 2017.
Liquidity fell by about 68.9 billion pounds in June, to 15.26 trillion pounds.
The drop reflects banks' push to attract additional deposits, particularly as lending accelerates and demand for financing rises.
At the same time, part of household savings is moving into gold and investment funds rather than certificates, which narrows the pool available to banks.
Competition is therefore no longer bank against bank alone; it now extends to alternative savings vehicles chasing the same liquidity.
The contest, in other words, is over liquidity before it is over headline yields.
Key terms explained:
Domestic liquidity: The total money available in the economy — currency in circulation plus bank deposits — known technically as money supply.
Savings certificate: A fixed-term deposit with a bank for a set amount, paying an agreed periodic yield.
Yield: The return a bank pays a saver for keeping money with it for a defined period.
Savings vehicle: Any instrument where households park savings — certificates, gold or investment funds.
Investment funds: Pools of many savers' money managed by professionals across a range of assets, with returns that move with the market.
Lending: Credit banks extend to individuals and companies; the more they lend, the more deposits they need to fund it.
