Egypt and South Korea Begin Free Trade Negotiations Following a 9-Fold Investment Surge
Egypt and South Korea have launched negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and signed 12 agreements, as Korean investment in Egypt jumped ninefold to $736 million.

Egypt and South Korea have initiated official negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, elevated their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership, and signed 12 agreements and memorandums of understanding, according to reports.
The agreements cover clean energy, information and communications technology, manufacturing, maritime transport, and social security, fields in which Cairo aims to attract technology transfer and manufacturing.
Bilateral trade between the two countries reached $640 million in the first half of 2026, down 9% year-on-year. In contrast, Korean investment in Egypt jumped ninefold to $736 million in the first half of fiscal year 2025/2026.
The agreement aims to reduce tariffs and barriers to goods and services between the two nations, which explains the divergence between declining annual trade and rising investment. This development directly impacts Egyptian companies seeking export opportunities and industrial partnerships, as lowering tariff barriers reduces the cost of accessing Asian markets and boosts their competitiveness.
What Do These Terms Mean?
Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement: A broad trade agreement between two nations that goes beyond tariff reduction to cover services, investment, and intellectual property, making it broader than a traditional free trade agreement.
Memorandum of Understanding: A non-binding agreement outlining areas of cooperation between two parties and their intention to work together, typically followed by detailed implementation agreements.
Tariff Barriers: Duties and measures imposed by a country on imported goods, increasing the cost of foreign products and reducing their local competitiveness.
Foreign Direct Investment: Funds injected by a foreign investor into domestic projects, unlike investments in financial markets, which can be liquidated quickly.
