Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation in the United States came in weaker than expected for August, reducing the chances of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike this month and pushing gold up toward $4,200 per ounce.
The headline price index rose by 0.3% month-on-month in August, compared to expectations of 0.4%, while the core index, which excludes food and energy prices, increased by 0.2% versus an expected 0.3%. On an annual basis, headline inflation stood at 3.4% compared to forecasts of 3.7%.
This slowdown led to a drop in the likelihood of an October rate hike to approximately 38% from 51% prior to the data release, while traders continue to price in nearly a 97% probability of an increase in December. The rally in gold encountered a ceiling near US Treasury yields, which remain close to multi-decade highs.
Investors will closely monitor upcoming inflation data and Federal Reserve meetings, with the probability of a December rate hike remaining high at around 97%, keeping gold's trajectory tied to Treasury yield movements and monetary policy developments.
What do these terms mean?
Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Index: A measure of the prices paid by US consumers for goods and services. It excludes food and energy because their prices are volatile, making it a key metric for the Federal Reserve before interest rate decisions. Core Index: The same measure excluding food and energy prices, providing a clearer picture of underlying inflation trends. Treasury Yields: The interest earned by holders of US government bonds; higher yields increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold. Federal Reserve: The US central bank that sets interest rates, whose decisions impact global markets.
