Gold Drops 23% from January 2026 Peak of $5,589 Amid Continued Pressure
Gold has fallen by about 23% from its historical peak of $5,589 per ounce recorded in January 2026. The yellow metal is currently trading in the $4,284-$4,300 range amid multiple pressures, including a strengthening US dollar, rising US bond yields, and easing geopolitical concerns.

Gold prices dropped by about 23% from their historical peak recorded in January 2026 at $5,589.38 per ounce, amid accumulating pressures pushing the precious metal toward further losses. Gold is currently trading in the $4,284-$4,300 range, having lost more than a thousand dollars from its record high in just nine months, according to data.
Several factors combine to intensify pressure on the yellow metal; the US dollar continues its rise against a basket of major currencies, while US Treasury yields escalate in response to the Federal Reserve's decision to raise interest rates by 25 basis points last week, elevating the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold.
On the technical indicators front, gold faces firm resistance at the $4,320 level, while relying on key support in the $4,250-$4,300 range. Analysts believe that breaking either of these two levels will be decisive in determining the metal's near-term direction, noting that an upside breakout above $4,320 could pave the way toward $4,475.
In a broader context, diplomatic progress in the Hormuz talks between the US and Iran reduces the geopolitical premium that was supporting gold prices. Investor inflows into gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have also declined, weakening one of the primary pillars that contributed to pushing prices to record levels early in the year.
What do these terms mean?
Opportunity cost: The loss incurred by an investor as a result of choosing one asset over another; in the case of gold, as US bond yields rise, holding non-interest-bearing gold becomes less attractive. Resistance and Support: Price ranges in which the metal tends to pause or reverse due to the concentration of buy or sell orders.
