Saudi Arabia and the UAE Sign a Memorandum of Understanding for Electrical Interconnection and Railways
Saudi Arabia and the UAE signed a memorandum of understanding in Riyadh to enhance cooperation in electrical interconnection, power exchange, electricity trading, and railway connection.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE signed a memorandum of understanding in Riyadh to enhance strategic cooperation in electrical interconnection, energy exchange and trading, and railway connection, according to Argaam, citing the Saudi Press Agency. The memorandum sets a general framework for cooperation between the two countries in two sectors that form the foundation for trade and energy movement between them.
The memorandum covers the general principles of electrical interconnection, including coordination with GCC countries regarding the expansion of the GCC Interconnection Grid. Expanding this grid is a step that allows power exchange among member states during peak hours and reduces the need to build additional generation capacity in each country individually.
The memorandum also includes principles governing railway connections for two-way transport and transit of goods between the two countries. This track is linked to broader efforts to facilitate land trade movement among Gulf states and reduce reliance on maritime routes for goods transport.
The memorandum did not include financial figures or a timeline for implementation, as it is limited to defining general principles of cooperation between the two sides. Turning these principles into actual projects remains dependent on subsequent steps to be announced by the relevant authorities in each country.
What do these terms mean?
Memorandum of Understanding: A non-legally binding document that outlines the intention of two or more parties to cooperate in a specific field, paving the way for subsequent formal agreements.
Electrical Interconnection: Connecting the power grids of two or more countries with transmission lines that allow energy exchange between them when needed or when generation prices change.
GCC Interconnection Grid: A system of power lines connecting the electrical grids of the GCC countries, allowing each nation to draw on its neighbors' surplus during peak demand.
Transit Transport: The passage of goods through the territory of one country to another without being consumed or sold in the transit country.
