Long-Term Government Bonds Fall to Record Lows as US Yield Hits Highest Level Since 2007

Global long-term government bond markets are witnessing an unprecedented, historic sell-off, as the 30-year US Treasury yield jumped to 5.339%, its highest level since June 2007, while German and Japanese bonds simultaneously recorded multi-decade highs.

Three factors converge to drive this surge: persistent high inflation refusing to abate, expanding fiscal deficits in major economies flooding the market with massive volumes of new issuances, and immense demand for financing artificial intelligence projects draining long-term capital.

The 10-year German bond yield rose to levels not seen since 2011, and the 10-year Japanese yield surpassed its highest level since 1996, signaling that the sell-off reflects a comprehensive global repricing of risk not limited to the United States.

This synchronized slide in major bond markets indicates that investors are fundamentally recalculating their positions; rising long-term bond yields mean higher borrowing costs for governments, corporations, and households for years to come.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Bond Yield: The annual return an investor receives for holding a bond, moving inversely to its price — meaning the lower the bond's price drops in the market, the higher its yield rises, and vice versa.

Long-Term Bonds: Government debt instruments spanning 10 or 30 years, which are the most sensitive to long-term inflation and interest rate expectations.

Sell-off: A situation in which investors rush to sell an asset all at once, rapidly depressing its price — which, in bonds, translates to a sharp surge in yields.
