Valar Atomics and Base Power Company raised nearly $2 billion in two separate funding rounds, reflecting growing investor conviction that decentralized nuclear energy has become the ideal choice to meet the massive needs of AI data centers.

Valar Atomics announced the closing of a $1 billion funding round led by a16z, along with a $200 million credit facility, aiming to develop small nuclear reactors designed specifically to power data centers directly off the public power grid. In the same context, Base Power closed a $1 billion Series D round at a $13 billion valuation, making it the fastest nuclear energy company to reach this valuation in the sector's history.

Investors believe that the traditional centralized power grid model can no longer keep up with the demand growth rates imposed by AI data centers, as a single next-generation data center consumes between 100 and 500 megawatts. Both companies are betting on the behind-the-meter energy model, where the reactor generates power and delivers it directly to the customer without going through the grid.

These deals represent a strategic shift in how AI infrastructure is funded; chips and software are no longer the sole focus, but power generation itself has become an independent investment asset. And the real bet here is not on nuclear energy itself, but that reliable, continuous power will be the bottleneck for the AI race over the next decade.

What do these terms mean?

Small Modular Reactor (SMR): A compact nuclear reactor with a capacity ranging between 10 and 300 megawatts, much smaller than traditional plants, which can be factory-manufactured, transported, and installed directly on-site.

Behind-the-Meter: A model in which the power source (such as a reactor) is connected directly to the customer's facility without going through the public power grid, ensuring supply independence and lower costs.

Series D: An advanced funding round obtained by startups after proving their business model, typically used for major expansion or preparing for an initial public offering.
