Hormuz Carries 30% of World's Seaborne Oil — Making Its Crisis Exceptional

The Strait of Hormuz carries between 25% and 30% of total global seaborne oil shipments, alongside about 20% of global liquefied natural gas exports, making it the most critical waterway in the international energy system.

Under normal conditions, dozens of supertankers carrying Gulf oil bound for Asia and Europe cross the strait daily, and any disruption to this flow translates immediately into price pressures across global energy markets.

There is no ready alternative capable of absorbing this volume of trade quickly; alternative overland pipelines such as the Abu Dhabi–Fujairah pipeline and the Saudi Yanbu pipeline take time to increase capacity, and they can only accommodate a fraction of the usual flow volume.

These figures reveal that the Strait of Hormuz is not merely a geographical point on the map, but a safety valve for the global economy; any disruption to it is economically equivalent to — severing one of the body's main arteries.

What do these terms mean?

Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC): A massive cargo ship designed to transport huge quantities of crude oil reaching up to two million barrels per voyage, serving as the backbone of global seaborne oil trade.

Abu Dhabi–Fujairah Pipeline: A strategic project connecting Abu Dhabi's oil fields to the Port of Fujairah on the Gulf of Oman, bypassing the Strait of Hormuz, with a capacity of up to 1.5 million barrels per day.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG): Natural gas cooled until it becomes a liquid to facilitate transportation in specialized tankers, with the Arabian Gulf being one of the world's largest export sources.
