Panama Canal Reduces Daily Transits to 34 Due to Drought

The Panama Canal Authority has reduced the permitted number of daily vessel transits from 36 to 34 as of September 3, against the backdrop of a continued decline in water levels in the lakes feeding the vital waterway.

The authority announced a second step involving a further reduction to 32 daily transits starting September 15, noting that the severe drought limits the canal's ability to maintain the water levels needed to operate its locks.

The Panama Canal handles about 5% of global maritime trade volume and serves as a vital artery for transporting goods between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, making any reduction in its capacity a cause of deep concern for international supply chains.

Shipping analysts warn that vessel backlogs outside the canal could extend for weeks if the drought persists, raising shipping costs and disrupting delivery schedules for consumer products and energy shipments alike.
