S&P 500 Hits All-Time High, Rising 18.8% Over One Year

The U.S. S&P 500 index recorded an all-time intraday high of 7,814 points in mid-August, before retreating to close at 7,681 points on August 21, up 18.8% compared to the same period last year.

The gain came following cooler-than-expected U.S. inflation data, as consumer and producer price indices showed a decline that boosted market expectations that the Federal Reserve would begin cutting interest rates early, while better-than-expected corporate earnings helped support the upward momentum.

The artificial intelligence sector was the main driver of this wave, as the technology sector rose 7% during August driven by massive spending on AI infrastructure, while the Nasdaq index recorded its first positive month in three months, and the Dow Jones approached the 54,000 mark in its fifth consecutive positive month.

However, analysts warn that high valuations narrow the margin of safety, as any delay in interest rate cuts or a geopolitical shock could trigger a sharp correction, especially if AI stocks—the core pillar of this rally—decline.

What do these terms mean?

Consumer Price Index (CPI): A measure that tracks changes in the prices of a daily basket of goods and services. Its decline means that inflation is dropping, giving central banks room to cut interest rates and stimulate the economy.

Nasdaq: One of the most prominent U.S. stock indices, primarily comprising technology and innovation companies such as Apple, Meta, and Nvidia. It is considered the most accurate gauge of the tech sector's pulse in the markets.

High Valuation: Means that a stock's market price is significantly higher than the company's intrinsic value. The higher the valuation, the narrower the margin of safety, and the greater the risk of a sharp correction during any shock.
