Bernstein Warns: AI Agents Threaten Travel Booking Platform Economics

Bernstein analysts believe AI-powered booking agents pose risks to online travel platforms, including disintermediation, commission pressure, and intensifying price competition, directly affecting Booking and Expedia, according to Investing.com.

The analysts noted that Booking and Expedia offered the cheapest hotel price in the United States only about 15% of the time in 2026, indicating a decline in their price advantage against alternative booking channels led by new agents.

It is estimated that about 70% of Airbnb's nine million listings are exclusive to the platform, and the company receives around 45% of its traffic directly, giving it a stronger position against pressure from new agents as it relies less on search engines or intermediaries.

These figures indicate that the online booking battle is gradually shifting from competing on price to competing over control of listings and direct access to travelers, a shift that could reshape market share distribution among travel platforms if agents succeed in streamlining search and booking steps on behalf of users. If this scenario plays out, profit margins could gradually shift from intermediaries to listing owners or agent providers, marking a fundamental change in the industry's structure.

What do these terms mean?

AI Agent: Software that searches, compares, and books on behalf of the user without direct human intervention. Disintermediation: The decline of the intermediary's role when both parties interact directly. Commission: A percentage deducted by the intermediary from the booking value in exchange for listing or sales services.
