OpenAI Reaches $852 Billion Valuation Amid Capital Concentration in AI

Reliable reports have observed that OpenAI reached a valuation of $852 billion, putting it among the world's most valuable companies, amid an unprecedented wave of capital concentration in frontier artificial intelligence companies.

This figure comes in the context of accelerated growth experienced by the sector during the first half of 2026, as total funding for artificial intelligence companies reached $510 billion, with OpenAI and its partner Anthropic accounting for about 43% of it combined, illustrating the extent of dominance exercised by major companies over capital flow in this sector.

Sam Altman founded OpenAI in 2015 with the goal of developing safe and beneficial artificial intelligence for humanity, and the company transformed from a non-profit research project into one of the fastest-growing companies in tech history, backed by a strategic partnership with Microsoft and the success of ChatGPT, which radically transformed the industry.

These figures indicate that the artificial intelligence industry is heading toward a structure that consolidates the position of specific players at the expense of smaller companies and new competitors. Amid this concentration, debate escalates over whether these astronomical valuations reflect real value or are built on highly optimistic future expectations.

What do these terms mean?

Frontier AI: The world's most advanced artificial intelligence models, such as GPT, Claude, and Gemini, which require massive computing resources and funding to develop.

Capital Concentration: The phenomenon of massive investments gathering in a very limited number of companies, as if most money in the car market went to only one or two companies.

Company Valuation: The figure agreed upon by investors and the company to determine its total value, and it does not necessarily mean that the company generates profits of that magnitude.
