Saudi Arabia has indefinitely postponed plans to construct the NEOM sports stadium, an elevated venue with a 46,000-seat capacity planned inside 'The Line' project, according to sources cited by Reuters.
The stadium's cost is estimated at around $2.5 billion, and it was among the candidate venues to host matches during the 2034 World Cup hosted by Saudi Arabia. The stadium appears in the MEED Projects database under the status 'On Hold' with no delivery date.
On the other hand, Saudi Arabia is continuing its preparations for the tournament, working on equipping 15 stadiums distributed across five cities, indicating that postponing the NEOM stadium does not mean backing down from hosting the event.
This comes at a time when the NEOM stadium is tied to 'The Line' giga-project, making its postponement a subject of close observation for investors, contractors, and construction companies, because major infrastructure projects drive demand for building materials and provide thousands of jobs, while the public follows Saudi Arabia's readiness to host the World Cup.
What do these terms mean?

'MEED Projects': A database for construction projects in the Middle East tracking their status.
