FTSE 100 Rises 0.23% as Mining Shines and Bank of England Splits 6-3 on Rates
The FTSE 100 rose supported by mining and defense amid 2.9% inflation and a 6-3 Bank of England split on rate hikes, with a 30% chance of a September hike.

The UK's FTSE 100 index ended the August 24 session slightly higher by 0.23% at 10,842 points, as mining and defense stocks led the gainers; Rio Tinto rose 0.55% supported by gold rising to multi-month highs and copper to $5.64 per pound, while Rolls-Royce added 0.47% on momentum in the defense and aerospace sector. Defensive consumer stocks such as Unilever (+0.65%) attracted modest inflows.
The UK inflation report for July revealed a 2.9% year-on-year increase in the headline index and 2.6% in core inflation, meaning inflation has remained above the central bank's 2% target for nearly five consecutive years. The Bank of England kept interest rates unchanged at 3.75% in its July meeting, but the vote split 6-3 with three members calling for an immediate 25 basis point hike, raising the odds of a September hike to around 30%.
HSBC shares fell 0.49% due to exposure to secondary Iranian sanctions through its activity in Hong Kong and China, while AstraZeneca lost 0.99% in a sell-off that hit the healthcare sector without a specific catalyst. Shell dropped 0.20% under pressure from falling oil prices and fears of sanctions-related crude trade disruptions. Meanwhile, the British pound posted a solid performance at $1.3550 (+0.14%).
Together, Shell and BP stocks account for about 10% of the FTSE 100 index weight, making any escalation in the Strait of Hormuz a direct threat to the overall performance of the index. If the Bank of England's September meeting pushes for a rate hike while energy tensions escalate, the UK market will face two simultaneous pressures: rising borrowing costs and slowing cyclical earnings at the same time.
