Global Trade Fragmentation Threatens the Openness of the European Economy

The European economy faces growing pressure from a wave of global trade fragmentation, which now threatens the model of economic openness on which Europe has relied for decades, amid rising protectionism and the disruption of international supply chains.

Europe registers a heavy reliance on foreign trade, with exports representing nearly 50% of the Eurozone's gross domestic product, making it more vulnerable to the repercussions of trade relations shifting toward closed regional blocs.

A report by the International Monetary Fund noted a decline in trade volume between the Western and Eastern blocs by over 10% compared to pre-2020 levels, signaling a potential sustained drop in European exports unless the continent shifts its trade partnerships.

The European Commission warned that continued global trade fragmentation could cost the European economy up to 3% of its annual GDP, calling on member states to diversify their trade partnerships toward markets in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

What do these terms mean?

Global trade fragmentation: Means the division of the global economy into separate trade blocs that prefer dealing among themselves and impose obstacles on the flow of goods and investments with other blocs.

Supply chains: Refers to the complete chain from raw material extraction, manufacturing, and distribution until the final product reaches the consumer; when disrupted, products are delayed and their prices rise.

Protectionism: An economic policy adopted by governments to protect their domestic industries from foreign competition by imposing high tariffs or limited import quotas on foreign goods.
