European Space Agency awards The Exploration Company €760 million for space station cargo services

The European Space Agency has awarded a €760 million contract to startup The Exploration Company, covering the provision of cargo transport services to the International Space Station, in the largest institutional contract ever secured by a European commercial space company.

This deal is viewed as a pivotal turning point in the journey of the European commercial space sector, proving that space startups in Europe are ready to take on tangible responsibilities in space infrastructure, mirroring the path taken by SpaceX and Orbital in the United States.

The Exploration Company is developing the reusable cargo vehicle Nyx, making this contract a lever to accelerate technology development and boost its competitiveness in the space cargo transport market currently led by SpaceX and Northrop Grumman.

This deal may encourage European space agencies to adopt a more open approach toward emerging commercial partners, rather than relying solely on traditional large defense contractors, in a move that revitalizes the European space startup ecosystem.
