Houthis Take Control of Additional Islands and Coastal Sites Near Mocha, Deepening Threat to Bab al-Mandab

The Houthis have seized additional islands and coastal positions near the Yemeni city of Mocha, in a move that deepens their effective control over the southern approaches to the Bab al-Mandab Strait, according to reports.

These positions hold critical strategic importance, as they overlook the waterway through which approximately 10% of global maritime shipping and over 4 million barrels of oil pass daily.

Since early 2024, the Houthis have intensified their attacks on commercial vessels and tankers in the Red Sea, prompting major shipping companies to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope, adding weeks to transit times and reducing the effective capacity of the global fleet.

Analysts said the expansion of the Houthis' land and maritime control near Bab al-Mandab narrows the options for any future naval intervention and complicates commercial negotiations with the group, while continuing to impact maritime insurance costs, which have risen sharply since the escalation began.

Oil tankers and commercial vessels passing near the Yemeni coast are classified as high risk, while alternative routes such as the Cape of Good Hope have become semi-permanent options for many major shipping lines.
