Arizona Sues TikTok, Accusing It of Addicting Children and Teenagers

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes filed a lawsuit against the TikTok platform on October 8, accusing it of deliberately addicting children and teenagers and exposing them to danger.

The lawsuit cited features in the app, including autoplay, reward loops, and instant notifications, stating that these features are designed to retain young users for as long as possible.

The lawsuit alleges repeated violations of Arizona's Consumer Fraud Act, accusations contained in a new complaint on which no judicial ruling has yet been issued.

This case is also relevant to families and regulatory bodies outside the United States, as it reopens the debate over social media platforms' responsibility for the impact of their features on children's behavior, a debate expanding across countries in the region that are establishing regulations for minor usage.

What do these terms mean?

Lawsuit: A legal proceeding brought by a party before a court to claim a right or compensation, which does not result in a ruling until the case is heard.

Consumer Fraud Act: An Arizona state law punishing misleading or deceptive practices in dealings with consumers.

Reward loops: A feature that grants the user a reward or new content upon repeated use, driving them to spend more time on the app.

Autoplay: A feature that automatically plays the next content without user selection, criticized for extending viewing duration.
