Brent Rises to $86.33 and WTI Crude Drops 1.92% Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions

The price of benchmark Brent crude rose to $86.33 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell by 1.92%, amid a wave of caution in international oil markets as tensions escalated around the Strait of Hormuz.

Reports of potential navigation disruptions in the Gulf region contributed to pushing traders toward defensive positions, while higher-than-expected US inventory data put pressure on WTI crude, creating a divergence in the performance of the two main benchmarks.

The Strait of Hormuz accounts for about 20% of total global oil exports, making any disruption to navigation through it an immediate reflection on global supplies and prices of crude and refined products.

Traders are awaiting developments in geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region, amid expectations of continued volatility in energy markets, especially with the approach of the winter demand season and declining spare production capacity among OPEC+ producers.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Brent Crude: The main international benchmark for crude oil pricing, extracted from the North Sea and used as a base for pricing oil in Europe, Africa, and many Asian countries.

WTI Crude: Short for "West Texas Intermediate," the US benchmark for crude oil pricing, traded on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX).

Strait of Hormuz: A narrow waterway separating the Arabian Gulf from the Arabian Sea, through which tankers carrying about one-fifth of global oil imports pass, making it a sensitive strategic chokepoint.
