S&P 500 Declines 0.25% to 7,712 Points After Reversing Gains

The U.S. S&P 500 index fell by 0.25% to close at the 7,712 level after reversing its early session gains, as hawkish remarks by Federal Reserve official Kevin Warsh at Jackson Hole injected a wave of selling pressure into the markets.

The index's decline came despite gains in major tech stocks such as Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta, which drew support from strong financial results in cloud computing and artificial intelligence, indicating that selling pressure was targeted at interest rate-sensitive sectors.

Analysts believe the slight decline in the index reflects caution rather than panic, as investors maintain their positions in strong growth companies while reducing exposure to sectors affected by rising interest rates, such as real estate, utilities, and regional banks.

Analysts note that the 7,700-point level represents important technical support for the index, and a decisive break below it could open the door to a deeper correction toward 7,500 points, while optimists see strength in tech providing a protective shield for the index.

What do these terms mean?

S&P 500 Index: Includes the 500 largest publicly traded U.S. companies and is considered the most comprehensive gauge of U.S. stock market performance. Its rise reflects investor confidence and its decline reflects concern.

Rate-sensitive sectors: Sectors damaged by rising interest rates, such as real estate, utilities, and banks, because higher interest rates increase borrowing costs and reduce profits or make them less attractive to investors.

Technical support: A price level at which the market tends to stop falling and may rebound. Traders use it to identify potential buying points or risk escalation levels.
