Mecka AI raised $60 million in a Series B funding round led by Sequoia, in a move aimed at expanding the collection of human motion data used to train robots.
Two tech giants, Nvidia and Microsoft's M12, participated in the round alongside other investors, according to TechCrunch. The participation of chip and cloud computing companies in a data company's round reflects how tied these firms are to AI and robotics supply chains.
Founded in 2024, the company pays people to record their daily tasks while wearing sensors on their bodies to gather real-world motion data used to train robots to move and interact with objects, rather than relying solely on lab-designed data. Demand for this type of data is growing as robotics companies race to build models capable of operating in unstructured environments.
TechCrunch previously reported that the round approached a valuation of nearly $500 million, but the company did not confirm this figure, making it a media estimate rather than an officially declared number, an important distinction when comparing the company to its competitors in the robotics training data sector.
What Do These Terms Mean?
Series B: A funding round typically used to scale a company's operations and enter new markets after proving its business model.
Training Data: The information an AI model or robot learns from before it actually begins operating.
Valuation: The estimated market value of a company, usually calculated based on the price of the latest investment round.
