Suez Canal Revenues Rise 23% to $4.67 Billion as Maritime Traffic Recovers

The Suez Canal Authority announced generating revenues of $4.67 billion during the fiscal year 2025/26, an increase of 23% compared to the previous fiscal year, indicating a tangible recovery in international navigation through the main Egyptian waterway.

The gradual return of major shipping companies to the canal route contributed to driving this improvement, following the wave of rerouting seen in recent months due to tensions in the Red Sea and Houthi threats, which prompted many tankers to favor the alternative Cape of Good Hope route.

The Suez Canal represents a vital trade artery through which about 12% of global maritime trade passes, while the revenues it generates are a major source of foreign currency for Egypt. The Authority had experienced a sharp decline in revenues during the fiscal year 2024/25 amid the diversion of shipping traffic to alternative routes.

These figures reflect an improvement in regional stability indicators and their direct reflection on international trade lines, although some major shipping companies continue to adopt a cautious approach regarding a full return to the shorter route via the Red Sea.

What do these terms mean?

Suez Canal revenues: The amounts collected by the Suez Canal Authority from transit fees paid by ships in exchange for using the waterway, which is one of the most important sources of foreign income for Egypt.

Rerouting to the Cape of Good Hope route: Shipping companies resorting to heading south around Africa instead of the Suez Canal, an option that is about two weeks longer but safer during times of security tensions in the Red Sea.

Maritime shipping: The transportation of goods via ships, which is the primary means of transporting more than 80% of world trade.
