Saudi Arabia Sets First Rules for Licensing Pleasure Boat Rentals in the Red Sea

The Saudi Red Sea Authority has issued the first "Requirements and Conditions for Pleasure Boat Rentals," which regulates boat chartering activities in the Red Sea waters, according to GCC Business News.

The rules obligate companies to obtain a maritime activity operator license, as well as a separate tourist rental license for each boat after it passes a technical inspection.

The license period is 12 months, renewable upon a review of compliance and service quality, according to the source.

The rules also stipulate emergency plans in both Arabic and English, insurance, price disclosure and cancellation policies, and marine environment protection, taking effect 180 days after publication.

What do these terms mean?

Maritime Activity Operator License: Official approval granting a company the right to manage a commercial maritime activity within a specified scope.

Tourist Rental License: A separate permit for each boat allowing it to be rented to tourists after fulfilling the technical inspection and requirements.

Emergency Plan: Written procedures outlining what to do in the event of an accident or danger at sea, and who is responsible for each step.
