MI5 Opens AI Threat Assessment Centre

Sir Ken McCallum, Director General of the British Security Service MI5, announced the creation of the 'AI Threat Assessment Centre' (AITAC), according to TNW.

The centre includes experts from the AI Safety Institute, the National Crime Agency, and the National Cyber Security Centre, aiming to provide the government with a single authoritative source on these threats.

McCallum said that extremists are already seeking to exploit AI, and that his greatest concern is AI's potential impact on the development of biological weapons.

On the same day, OpenAI informed members of the UK House of Commons that more rogue AI incidents could emerge later.

What do these terms mean?

MI5: Britain's domestic security agency, responsible for counter-espionage, counter-terrorism, and threats to national security.

National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC): The British entity that coordinates the protection of networks and systems from cyberattacks.

Biological Weapons: Weapons that rely on living organisms or toxins to harm humans, which AI is feared to make easier to develop.
