Japan Raises Cyber Warning After Data Leak of Millions of Records

Japan's National Cybersecurity Office urged ministries, local authorities, and companies to strengthen their digital defenses following a wave of breaches targeting more than 20 major firms, as reported by 'The Next Web'.

Times Car stated that data belonging to approximately 6.6 million member accounts was leaked, while JR East announced the leak of 1.67 million customer email addresses.

On October 7, IDC Frontier, a subsidiary of SoftBank, suffered a ransomware attack that affected 495 companies and local government entities.

The National Police Agency recorded a record high of 123 ransomware incidents in the first half of 2026. This surge places cyberattacks at the forefront of risks facing both the public and private sectors in Japan.
