AMD Unveils 'Helion' Design for AI Agent Racks

AMD has unveiled a reference design for computing racks dedicated to AI agents, compliant with Open Compute Project (OCP) standards, according to a report by The Register.

The design accommodates up to 32,768 Zen 6 architecture cores and up to 16 Instinct MI350P GPUs, with networking speeds reaching up to 102 Terabits per second.

AMD plans to submit the design specifications to the Open Compute Project, allowing hardware manufacturers to build compatible systems. Partner-built configurations are scheduled to hit the market in November 2026, including offerings from Cisco, Dell, HPE, Foxconn, Lenovo, and Supermicro.

This move comes amid growing demand for infrastructure capable of running AI agents that sequentially make decisions and execute tasks, driving providers to offer unified systems that simplify scaling.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Reference Design: A blueprint adopted by manufacturers to build systems compatible with a single standard, reducing variability and making installation and scaling easier.

Open Compute Project (OCP): An initiative comprising tech companies that establish open standards for server and data center design, allowing components to be interchangeable among manufacturers.

AI Agent: An artificial intelligence program that executes a sequence of steps and makes decisions to accomplish a specific task, going beyond mere text generation.
