Google: Fixing Content Does Not Guarantee Recovering Lost Traffic
Google confirmed that fixing content does not guarantee the return of traffic, as ranking recovery no longer implies click recovery amid the growing space occupied by AI Overviews.

Google has updated its content guidelines, placing clearer responsibility on publishers to manually verify AI-generated content before publishing it, including titles, meta descriptions, structured data, and image alt texts, not just the body text alone.
According to MarTech, the guidelines indicate that sites that suffered a significant drop in rankings should audit their site broadly and make meaningful, substantial improvements rather than chasing quick fixes. Furthermore, these changes may take time to be evaluated, and there is no guarantee they will lead to noticeable improvement in search results.
Here, a key difference often ignored emerges: ranking recovery no longer means traffic recovery. Even if Google re-evaluates a page more favorably, the page is now competing in a different search results environment, where AI Overviews, forums, and videos occupy more space, meaning a page might improve without regaining its clicks.
The analysis notes that this shift makes the matter a content operations management issue rather than a technical checklist, because the guidelines assume AI is now part of the publishing workflow and insist on a human reviewer capable of improving or stopping the work. Meanwhile, Google is less inclined to reward content that rewrites widely available information and places greater weight on original data, experience, and case studies.
What do these terms mean?
AI Overviews: Concise answers generated by Google using AI that appear at the top of search results, potentially answering the user's query without them visiting a website.
Ranking recovery: The return of a page to a better position in search results, which does not necessarily mean the return of the number of clicks it used to receive.
AI-generated content: Text or images produced by automated tools, requiring human review to ensure accuracy before publishing.
