France Detains Suspected 'Shadow Fleet' Tanker as Russia Denounces 'Piracy'

The French military detained the Benin-flagged tanker 'DF Peak', previously known as 'Kaliningrad', approximately 450 nautical miles south of Réunion Island on suspicion of belonging to the Russian 'shadow fleet' circumventing sanctions.

French President Emmanuel Macron stated that his country is 'determined to fight the shadow fleet', emphasizing that the operation is part of enforcing sanctions imposed on Russia.

In contrast, the Russian Embassy described the detention as 'piracy', according to Reuters via gCaptain, adding that the ship had previously docked at the Venezuelan port of Guanta.

This detention comes after similar operations carried out by European nations against vessels suspected of carrying sanctioned oil, amid concerns over the impact of these practices on global shipping and oil markets.

What Do These Terms Mean?

'Shadow Fleet': Older cargo ships with opaque ownership used by Russia to transport sanctioned oil away from international oversight.

Piracy: In international law, the illegal seizure of a ship on the high seas; used here by Moscow as a political accusation.

Sanctions: Economic restrictions imposed by countries on a state or companies to prevent trading in specific goods or sectors.

Nautical Mile: A unit of distance measurement at sea, where one nautical mile equals approximately 1.85 kilometers.
