Markets Price in 87% Probability of Bank of Japan Rate Hike to 1.25% in September
Financial markets have raised the probability of the Bank of Japan hiking interest rates from 1% to 1.25% in September to 87%, amid ongoing inflationary pressures and rising living costs in Japan.

Financial markets have raised the probability of the Bank of Japan increasing its benchmark interest rate from 1% to 1.25% during its September meeting to nearly 87%, driven by rising inflationary indicators and a tight labor market that strengthens arguments for further monetary tightening.
This expectation comes as Tokyo's inflation rose to a five-month high, and Japan's unemployment rate fell to 2.4%, signaling the resilience of the Japanese economy and its ability to absorb additional interest rate hikes.
This potential hike represents a continuation of the monetary policy normalization process in Japan, which spent decades in zero and negative interest rate territory—a radical shift that is reshaping the map of global capital flows.
Economists warn that a Japanese rate hike reduces the appeal of "carry trades" funding emerging markets, as investors borrow in cheap yen to invest in higher-yielding assets. As the yen rises, this spread erodes and trades are liquidated, putting pressure on global financial markets.
What do these terms mean?
Carry Trade: An investment strategy based on borrowing in a low-interest currency (such as the yen) and investing in assets in a higher-interest currency. A Japanese rate hike makes it less profitable.
Monetary Policy Normalization: A central bank's return to normal interest rate levels after a long period of low or zero interest rates. This redraws global investment calculations anew.
Negative Interest Rates: An unconventional policy in which the central bank charges fees on deposits instead of paying interest on them, aiming to push banks to lend and stimulate the economy. Japan practiced this for many years.
