Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said trade negotiations with the United States have reached a "plateau" with limited room for maneuver, after US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said reaching an agreement was not "imminent," according to Reuters citing Investing.com.

A framework agreement reached in February had reduced punitive tariffs on most Indian goods to 18% from 50%, but a Supreme Court ruling struck down the use of emergency powers to impose global tariffs, leaving tariffs at a baseline rate of 10%.

Adding to the uncertainty surrounding the final fate of the tariffs is an unfinished Section 301 investigation into excess production capacity, as well as a new law allowing tariffs of up to 100% over India's purchases of Russian oil.

Exporters in Asia and the Gulf are watching the course of negotiations closely because the final tariff level will determine trade costs and supply chain expenses between India and its key markets, particularly in the textiles, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural sectors.

What do these terms mean?

Section 301: A provision in US trade law allowing retaliatory tariffs to be imposed against unfair trade practices. Punitive Tariffs: High tariffs imposed to punish a country for trade practices. Excess Production Capacity: Production exceeding domestic demand, putting pressure on competitors' prices.
