Saudi Arabia Tops Gulf Nations in Economic Resilience Indicators

Saudi Arabia tops the list of the most resilient economies among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, according to assessments by the International Monetary Fund and several international institutions, based on the size of its reserves, its competitiveness, and the pace of its economic diversification.

The Kingdom possesses foreign currency reserves and sovereign wealth funds exceeding $700 billion, in addition to the Public Investment Fund, which is considered one of the largest sovereign wealth funds globally, providing a financial shield against external shocks.

The non-oil sector in the Kingdom records growth exceeding 4% annually, driven by government spending on Vision 2030 giga-projects, such as NEOM, The Line, Qiddiya, and the Red Sea project, diversifying the revenue base and reducing reliance on oil.

The Kingdom controls more than 17% of proven global oil reserves, which grants it strategic influence within OPEC+ and the capacity to manage revenues in the long term.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Sovereign Wealth Funds: These are investment funds owned by governments and used to deploy surplus revenues into diverse assets around the world, aiming to preserve national wealth for future generations and hedge against oil price volatility.

Foreign Currency Reserves: This is the sum of gold, foreign currencies, and Special Drawing Rights held by central banks, serving as the primary cushion for facing economic crises and stabilizing the value of the national currency.

Economic Resilience: A term describing the ability of an economy to withstand external shocks and recover from them quickly, whether they are fluctuations in commodity prices, global financial crises, or geopolitical disruptions.
