Alphaliner: 63% of Far East-Europe Shipping Capacity Returns to Red Sea

Data from shipping research firm Alphaliner showed that 63% of container capacity allocated to direct lines between the Far East and Europe is now operated via the Red Sea, according to the World Ports Organization (WPO).

According to the data, 24 out of 46 direct services between the Far East and Europe used the Red Sea route from September 15 to October 15, accounting for 5.50 million out of 8.70 million TEUs of deployed capacity.

The Red Sea share reached about 70% on Far East-Mediterranean lines and 58% on Far East-Northern Europe lines, while some services continue to return east via the Cape of Good Hope route.

These figures point to a gradual shift in global shipping routes, as container lines redirect their vessels back to the Red Sea, which could alter pricing calculations and delivery times in European markets.

What do these terms mean?

Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU): A unit of measurement equivalent to a 20-foot container, used to compare vessel and port capacities.

Container Capacity: The total number of containers a ship or shipping line can transport in a single voyage.

Cape of Good Hope: The southern tip of the African continent, representing an alternative sea route to the Suez Canal.
