Wall Street Declines Under Pressure from Iranian Sanctions as Alibaba Plunges 8.57%
Wall Street declined during the August 24 session as Alibaba shares plunged 8.57%, while the VIX rose 5.23% ahead of Nvidia's earnings, the Jackson Hole summit, and PCE data.

Wall Street closed the August 24 session lower, overshadowed by caution, as the S&P 500 index lost about 0.28% to settle at 7,658 points, while the VIX fear index jumped 5.23% to 15.92 points, signaling eroding confidence ahead of a pivotal week.
Alibaba shares led the losers with a sharp drop of 8.57% to $119.34, after secondary U.S. sanctions on Iran hit Chinese companies dealing with Tehran, raising the risk premium on China-linked stocks. Energy stocks also suffered, with BP declining by more than 2% under dual pressure from sanction repercussions and falling oil prices, while ExxonMobil and Chevron lost between 0.8% and 0.9%.
Semiconductor and artificial intelligence sectors faced a mild sell-off ahead of Nvidia's anticipated earnings, with shares falling 0.98% to $214.72 amid high revenue expectations ranging between $93 billion and $95 billion, leaving little room for error. Conversely, credit services, food products, and precious metals led the gainers in a classic defensive move.
Investors are awaiting three major events in the coming days: Nvidia's quarterly results, which will set the tone for the AI sector; Federal Reserve speeches at Jackson Hole, which could redraw interest rate expectations; and PCE index data, which will reveal the trajectory of inflation. This rare convergence of three major catalysts in a single week could determine market direction through the end of the year.
What Do These Terms Mean?
VIX: The U.S. market volatility index known as the "fear index," measuring future expectations of volatility. Its rise means investors expect sharp price movements.
Jackson Hole: An annual economic forum bringing together major central bank governors in Wyoming, USA, whose speeches are considered among the most important signals for global interest rate policy.
PCE Index: Personal Consumption Expenditures index, the Federal Reserve's preferred measure of inflation. Its rise reduces the likelihood of interest rate cuts.
