ChatGPT Launches Paid Ads for Free Users in India

OpenAI has launched paid advertisements within the ChatGPT platform for its free users in India, in a move that marks the first time the company integrates ads into its flagship product.

The partnership came in collaboration with advertising giants WPP and Omnicom, as the new system targets more than 100 million Indian users, with a daily minimum of $7.60 for advertisers. The company also announced plans to launch an Ad Manager platform next month, opening the door for more advertisers to target ChatGPT users.

This shift comes at a time when OpenAI seeks to diversify its revenue streams beyond just the paid subscription model, as the company sees India as a promising market with millions of users who do not pay for access to the service.

Reports indicate that ads will appear in a non-intrusive format integrated within ChatGPT conversations, allowing users to dismiss or ignore them. OpenAI had previously announced plans to embrace advertising, but India is the first major market where this experiment is launched on a large scale.

Why it matters: This shift represents the first real test of an advertising model within AI applications, which could alter how these platforms are funded globally and pressure competitors to match the same transition.
