Atlas Atomics Raises Around $400 Million for New Nuclear Reactors

Atlas Atomics raised around $400 million in a Series A funding round led by General Catalyst with participation from Andreessen Horowitz, bringing its valuation to nearly $1.9 billion.

Founded in the American city of Austin with backing from entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, the company is developing heavy water reactors that do not require enriched uranium to operate.

The company remains in stealth mode, having not announced technology details or a timeline for commercial production. All three parties, the company and the two investors, declined to comment on the deal.

The funding comes at a time of growing global interest in nuclear energy as a stable, low-emission power source, accompanied by an increasing appetite from venture funds to finance advanced reactor companies.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Series A Round: The first major round of institutional funding raised by a company after the seed stage, used for product development or market expansion.

Enriched Uranium: Uranium in which the percentage of the fissile isotope has been increased to make it suitable as reactor fuel; its enrichment process requires complex and expensive facilities and technology.

Heavy Water: A type of water containing the hydrogen isotope "deuterium," used as a moderator in some nuclear reactors instead of ordinary water.

Stealth Mode: A state in which a company operates without publicly announcing its details or products to the public, keeping its funds and technology away from competitors' eyes.
