Nestlé Signs Largest International Marketing Partnership in Its History with the NBA

Nestlé announced a multi-year international marketing partnership with the National Basketball Association (NBA), describing it as the largest international sponsorship effort in its history, spanning 21 countries across four continents. The partnership comes through the company's cocoa and malt beverages unit, which includes the Milo, Nescau, and Nesquik brands.

Under the agreement, the three brands will become official partners of the league, with a goal of engaging at least 2.5 million young people in physical activity. Nestlé stated that campaigns will be tailored market-by-market to suit each country individually, while sharing common global goals regarding youth participation, engagement, and commercial growth.

Ali Abbas, who leads Nestlé's cocoa and malt beverages unit, declined to disclose the deal's value, citing confidentiality clauses in the agreement. He said that through this collaboration, the company is seeking "youth, culture, reach, and relevance to future generations," pointing to a "strong connection and perfect alignment" with the company's health mission, and adding that this "aligns with the vision surrounding weight-loss drugs (GLP-1)."

Peter Laatz, global managing director at sponsorship marketing agency IEG, said brands are now "using sports differently to serve a narrative closer to their goals." He noted that the average sponsorship revenue for professional US sports teams reached about $51 million annually, compared to $26 million a decade ago. Sports account for 70 to 75 percent of global sponsorship spending, according to WPP data.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Sports Sponsorship: An agreement under which a company pays a sum or provides products in exchange for associating its name with a team or league, aiming to reach its audience and align with its image.

Multi-Market Marketing: A single campaign designed globally in its overall form and then adjusted locally to fit the culture, language, and customs of each market, rather than replicating the exact same offering everywhere.

GLP-1 Drugs: A class of medications used to treat obesity and diabetes that reduces appetite; their promotion is linked to food and beverage companies shifting toward healthier, protein-rich products.
