Goldman Sachs Downgrades Maersk to Sell, Expects 24% Drop

Goldman Sachs downgraded Danish company Maersk's stock rating to Sell from Neutral, keeping its 12-month price target unchanged at 18,000 kroner, which represents a potential 24% decline from recent trading levels.

The analyst team led by Patrick Creuset said new vessel deliveries are expected to rise to 8% to 10% of the fleet in the second half of 2027, exceed 15% in 2028 and remain above 12% year on year even in 2029, adding that a full return to the Suez Canal could cut TEU-mile demand by a mid-single-digit percentage next year.

Maersk shares fell about 3% on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange after the note was published, as reported by Investing.com via Yahoo Finance.

The downgrade reflects investor concern that increased vessel supply alongside improved navigation through Suez could put pressure on freight rates and container company profits in coming years.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Target Price: The price an analyst expects a stock to reach within a specified period, used to estimate potential return.

Sell Rating: A recommendation from an investment bank to sell a stock, usually meaning the bank expects its price to decline from its current level.

TEU-Mile: A metric combining the volume of container cargo, measured in twenty-foot equivalent units, and the distance it is transported, used to measure actual demand for shipping.
