The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) approved its new strategy for the 2026-2030 period, in a move that reportedly signals a strategic shift toward increasing investments within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the expense of international acquisitions and investments. This strategy comes at a stage when the fund's assets reach approximately $1.21 trillion, making it one of the largest sovereign wealth funds in the world.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman chairs the fund's board of directors, and the new direction reflects a higher priority for Vision 2030 projects aimed at diversifying the Saudi economy away from oil, localizing key industries, and creating jobs locally. In recent years, the fund injected massive investments into multiple international markets, from Wall Street to Asia, which is expected to relatively decline in the coming phase.
This shift enhances the Kingdom's efforts to build a diversified economic base beyond oil revenues, as the new strategy focuses on specific sectors such as technology, infrastructure, renewable energy, and entertainment. These are sectors in which the Public Investment Fund seeks to consolidate its local presence through its portfolio companies like Saudi Aramco, SABIC, and others, as well as startups and direct project spin-offs.
Analysts believe that approving a clear five-year strategy provides investors and international partners with a more plannable vision regarding the fund's trajectory, although actual implementation and asset allocation between domestic and international investments will determine the final assessment of this strategic transition's success.
