US-China Talks Falter Over Tariffs, Minerals, Chips, and Taiwan

US-China negotiation rounds have revealed deep-seated contentious issues that go beyond the question of tariffs to include export restrictions on rare earth minerals, electronic chip controls, and escalating tensions over Taiwan.

China has imposed restrictions on the export of vital rare earth minerals relied upon by US technology, defense, and clean energy industries, while Washington has refused to lift its controls on exporting advanced chips and artificial intelligence technologies to China.

The Taiwan issue represents the deepest layer of dispute, as Beijing insists that any trade agreement cannot be isolated from the US stance on its sovereignty over the island, complicating the entire diplomatic path.
